Welcome to the story of cool. As an amalgam of western and eastern influences, many Americans carry with them traditions, expectations, and perceptions of the world inherited culturally without a whole lot of thought or reflection. In this course, we examine more closely the story of how we came to be the sorts of people that we are. We study the governments, politics, technologies, literatures, artistic endeavors, failures, crimes, plays, and atrocities from our earliest Neolithic ancestors through courtly lyric poetry of the middle ages. We travel to the underworld with Odysseus, Aeneas, Dante, and others.
