Poetry Writing - ENGL 310
In this advanced poetry workshop, we'll spend time expanding our poetic repertoire, honing our workshop skills, and deepening our understanding of what poetry can do by exploring other poets' work. In the second half of the semester, students will shift focus to create a chapbook length original poetry collection, learn how to be an effective reader of poetry in public, and we'll explore the poetry scene in Grand Rapids.
Since this workshop is led by the Grand Rapids poet laureate, students will have a chance to participate in poet laureate projects such as open-mic poetry, public workshops, essay writing for an anthology set to debut in April 2027, and a poetry festival in October 2026 called "Poetry Saves Lives."
